Some information about the prototype:
The Class 215 is a diesel-hydraulic locomotive of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, built between 1968 and 1971 for passenger and freight service. Based on the proven V 160 platform, it impresses with flexibility and reliability on main and branch lines. Equipped with through steam boilers for heating passenger coaches and an auxiliary diesel engine for battery charging, the Class 215 proved itself in all types of service – from the Eifel and the Lower Rhine to the Lake Constance region.
After more than 30 years in service and the conversion of some locomotives to Class 225, the Class 215 remains a symbol of versatility, efficiency and durability in German rail transport. Thanks to its high adhesive weight, the class became a true universal locomotive in mountainous regions, revolutionizing branch line operations in particular with its maximum speed of 80 km/h in both directions. Due to declining traffic volumes and the closure of many branch lines, the locomotives lost their areas of operation and were withdrawn and scrapped by 1989. Fortunately, more than a dozen machines were spared and can still be admired today as museum and monument locomotives.
