Some information about the prototype:

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) added a total of 1,279 Bmhe center-entrance coaches to its fleet, which were built at the namesake Raw Halberstadt works. With a length of 26.40 meters, these passenger coaches reached a maximum speed of 140 km/h. Contrary to the planned use in semi-fast and regional trains, they were mainly deployed as international express train coaches in their early years. Originally, the coaches were equipped only with 2nd class seating. After German reunification, in an effort to meet customer expectations, the DR converted part of the coaches’ medium-sized open compartments into 1st class sections and replaced the remaining furnishings with modern equipment. A prototype of the modernized coaches was completed as early as 1991 and received the class designation AByu, which gave rise to the term “y-coaches” for all such converted center-entrance cars. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, numerous coaches were also loaned to the Deutsche Bundesbahn. After DB AG last used the Halberstadt center-entrance coaches as passenger cars at the end of 2015, many were sold to Hungary and other Southeastern European countries.
