About the prototype:

Although the V 200.0 class locomotives had proven themselves, the increasing transport demand led Deutsche Bundesbahn at the end of the 1950s to commission a more powerful development. In 1960, Krauss-Maffei was contracted to develop and build the V 200.1. Compared to its predecessor, this locomotive class featured more powerful engines and a redesigned roof and front end. The locomotives, designated class 221 from 1968 onward, were intended for use on the Allgäu and Black Forest lines, as well as the Vogelfluglinie connecting Germany and Denmark. Most of the elegant locomotives, however, spent their final years hauling heavy freight in the Ruhr area before their retirement in 1988.
