Some information about the prototype and model:

The basic design of the electric locomotives of the Dutch State Railways Series 1000 is based on the SBB Ae 4/6, with which it also shares the axle arrangement. The first three machines, 1001 to 1003, were built in 1948 by SLM in Winterthur in co-operation with Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon. The remaining seven machines were manufactured for NS by Werkspoor NV in Utrecht. In contrast to their sisters in Switzerland, the machines were not designed for alternating current, but of course for the 1500-volt direct current electrified network of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

The locomotives with up to 3,296 kW and a speed of 135 km/h were initially intended for express train services between the major Dutch cities. However, the high thermal load at speeds over 100 km/h resulted in a high susceptibility to faults and soon cancelled this plan. As a result, they were used almost exclusively in front of goods trains throughout their service life until 1982. Today, only the locomotive with the number 1010 has been preserved and can be viewed in the railway museum in Utrecht, which is well worth a visit.

Despite technical deficits, the 1000 series locomotives were visually very appealing designs that still had a touch of the streamlined era about them. This fact was both an incentive and a challenge for the PIKO designers. The sides of the elongated locomotive are divided by the finely engraved fan grilles, above which crystal-clear and perfectly flush engine room windows have been inserted. The roof is characterised by a streamlined bonnet. A finely detailed undercarriage, which rolls on extremely filigree spoked wheels, peeps out from under the longitudinal beam. Details such as the brake system or the sand pipes that almost reach the rail head have also been realised in an impressive manner. Technically, the PIKO model is in clear contrast to the prototype: A solid drive ensures reliable traction. The lighting with numerous switchable functions is designed in contemporary LED technology. The centrepiece is a main board with a PluX22 interface, which provides various lighting functions. The models equipped with vehicle sound at the factory have numerous entertaining sound effects.

With the Rh 1000, PIKO is bringing what is probably the most elegant electric locomotive in the Netherlands to the H0 tracks.
