Some information about the prototype:
Between 1946 and 1989, the diesel-electric locomotives of the series 500 shaped the daily operations of the Dutch State Railways (NS). A total of 45 machines were in service – reliable, powerful, and distinctive. The first ten units (No. 501–510) arrived immediately after World War II via the British War Department. The striking grey three-axle locomotives quickly became indispensable helpers in shunting operations – especially at large stations such as Utrecht, Zwolle, and Rotterdam Feijenoord. Due to their high reliability, NS soon expanded its fleet: 35 more locomotives (No. 511–545) followed, initially in classic olive green, and from the 1970s in modern yellow-grey.
Even legends have to make way: The War Department locomotives 501–510 were the first to be retired between 1969 and 1972. Their successors lasted longer and were gradually retired between 1976 and 1989.
Today, four locomotives of the series 500 have been preserved for posterity – and can be seen in Dutch museums as historical witnesses.
Our prototype: Diesel Locomotive 652, in the condition of the 1950s, stationed at Zwolle depot.
