From Sonneberg to Lübeck — PIKO brings “Rail Day” 2025 to life

Sonneberg, September 2025 – From 19 to 21 September 2025, Germany celebrates “Rail Day”. PIKO Spielwaren GmbH is taking part in the nationwide action weekend with a wide range of events and presentations. From the official opening ceremony in Coburg to exclusive insights at the company headquarters in Sonneberg and a special rollout in Lübeck – PIKO is there right from the start.

The official press release from Allianz pro Schiene explains: “Rail Day” has been celebrated once a year since 2022 as part of the European Mobility Week and is coordinated by Allianz pro Schiene e. V. Companies, associations, clubs, and other institutions along the entire value chain open their doors, invite people to events, and make the fascination of railways tangible.

PIKO is delighted to be part of this major railway celebration and to enrich the weekend with its own highlights.

“Rail Day” will be officially opened on 19 September together with the Bavarian Minister of Transport, Christian Bernreiter, in Coburg. The opening ceremony is organised each year by the federal state that holds the chairmanship of the Conference of Transport Ministers. State Minister Christian Bernreiter invites selected guests from politics and business to Coburg for this occasion. PIKO Managing Director Rainer Landwehr will personally attend the opening, underscoring the company’s close connection to the railways. As a special highlight, PIKO is sponsoring a custom-printed special wagon, which will be included in the welcome packages for the participants – an exclusive keepsake marking the start of the action weekend.

Also on Friday, PIKO will open the doors of its headquarters in Sonneberg. During an exclusive factory tour, visitors can experience first-hand how high-quality model trains “Made in Germany” are created from ideas, technology, and a great deal of passion. From the initial design to the finished locomotive, visitors will see how much attention to detail and precision goes into every model – and why this fascination has inspired generations.

Whether families, railway enthusiasts or simply the curious: everyone is warmly invited to take a look behind the scenes. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity to browse to your heart’s content in the adjacent PIKO Flagship Store Sonneberg, discover new products and receive expert advice.

Participation in the tour is free of charge; however, registration is required via the PIKO website (www.piko.de). Last-minute registrations are also very welcome.

Another highlight awaits railway and model railway fans on Saturday, 20 September 2025, at the official “Rail Day” event of Lübeck Port Company.

PIKO will be present with its own stand and a G scale layout. In the afternoon, between 16:00 and 17:30, the ceremonial rollout of the new G scale model of the BR 221 (Art. No. 37460/37461) will take place. Parallel to the model presentation, the historic Altmark Rail BR 221 will be on site as the prototype – an authentic and impressive backdrop. The locomotive will be running in historic shuttle service beforehand.37460 G Diesel Locomotive BR 221 Title Image

In addition to the BR 221, a sample of the new chemical tank wagon (Art. No. 37860) will also be presented. Visitors will be able to see the models in operation, ask questions and exchange ideas with the PIKO experts.

A strictly limited special wagon for “Rail Day” 2025 will also be released as a collector’s item. The wagon is available exclusively from PIKO in the online shop, flagship store or at the IMA trade fair stand. Collectors and fans can thus secure a lasting souvenir.

At the same time as “Rail Day”, PIKO will also be present at the International Model Railway Exhibition (IMA) in Göppingen from 19 to 21 September 2025.

At the PIKO stand, visitors can expect, among other things, the detailed G scale model of Neuffen station as well as the first information on the new PIKO Kids starter sets, which can be tried out on site from Saturday onwards. In addition, there will be a wide selection of current new products from the PIKO range.

The presence in Göppingen complements PIKO’s varied programme for “Rail Day” and offers model railway fans another opportunity to experience PIKO live.

With its activities in Sonneberg, Lübeck and Göppingen, PIKO is actively participating in “Rail Day” 2025. Whether it’s a look behind the scenes, the ceremonial presentation of new models or direct exchanges with fans and collectors – this weekend, PIKO shows the full variety and passion for model railways.
