The luxuriously equipped train sets of the Metropolitan Express Train (MET) were in service on the Cologne-Hamburg route between 1999 and 2004. Unlike other DB AG passenger trains, the Metropolitan was not divided into classes. Instead, the carriages were divided into different seating areas. When the train sets were put into service, there were three areas: two Silence carriages for resting passengers, three Office carriages for working passengers and two Club carriages for all other passengers. In terms of the level of equipment, the carriages were significantly higher than the 1st class of the time and had wooden wall panelling, leather seats and ceiling panelling made of brushed stainless steel mesh.

On the outside, the PIKO wagon models impress with their elegant appearance, with their plastic-looking engravings and flush-mounted window strips, which are in no way inferior to those of the prototype. The tinted windows provide a view of the individual, appropriately designed, multi-coloured interior of each car. The carriages are also fitted with harmonious interior lighting ex works. It is designed to create uniform, indirect and true-to-the-original lighting of the interior - with high energy efficiency. The lighting concept is patented by PIKO Spielwaren GmbH.

The class 101 express electric locomotive has a factory-installed triple headlights that change over with the direction of travel, two red marker lights, digitally controlled headlights, and lighting in the engineer's cabs. The locomotive has a two-pole coupling on one side to connect it to the train. The side facing away from the train is fully equipped at the factory. The cab control car has prototypical headlights that change over with the direction of travel as well as digitally switchable lighting for the engineer's cab and driver's desk. The headlights and the high beams can also be controlled digitally in digital operation.

With the true-to-scale model of the Metropolitan, PIKO brings the glamour of the luxury train back onto the tracks and at the same time raises the design of the interior lighting to a new level in 1:87 scale.
